This is a medium-sized breed. Height at the shoulders is 13-16 inches, and weight is 40-60 pounds.
Basset Retrievers are even-tempered, playful, and affectionate. Seeming to take the best traits from both parent breeds, these dogs have laid-back, intelligent, active personalities, and are excellent with children and other pets; they are nearly the ideal family companions. They may be a bit suspicious of unknown people or animals, but consistent training and early socialization usually minimizes any improper behavior. They also learn very easily, and normally make good watchdogs.
These dogs don't require much care. They shed moderately, and will need weekly brushing; baths are necessary only occasionally. Their long, floppy ears will need regular cleaning to prevent infections. A lot of physical activity will be necessary, but little training will be needed.
This breed's average lifespan is 9-12 years. Basset Retrievers are prone to obesity, so it's important to not let these dogs overeat (two meals of 1-1.5 cups of dog food per day should be adequate), and to give them plenty of vigorous exercise to burn off calories.
