Chigi Care

The Chigi, as a hybrid of a Chihuahua and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is a small-sized, friendly companion crossbreed that gets along well with people and other pets, and is fairly low-energy. These hybrids form deep bonds with their human(s), and will need a pretty good bit of attention. Overall Chigi care and maintenance won't take too much work, but will need to include a little daily exercise--and especially, plenty of TLC!

Below you'll find details on caring for a Chigi including info about puppy development, exercise needs, and shedding tendencies. Get answers to your questions about raising a Chigi in the following sections!

Chigi Exercise Needs

Though playful and fun-loving, these hybrids' activity levels aren't too high--so Chigi exercise needs are low to moderate. Still, they'll do best if they have a variety of activities that both condition them physically (walking, fetch) and stimulate them mentally (games, canine sports).

Adult Chigis, depending on their age and overall activity levels, will only need 30-45 minutes of dedicated exercise per day. You can start exercising your Chigi puppy when it's 2½-3 months old by taking it on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length as the pup grows.

Precautions with Chigi exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies too hard before they're nine months old
  • Might be prone to back problems; no jumping onto (and off of) taller objects
  • A leash is recommended when exercising in public
  • Yards should be securely fenced to keep the dog from running off
  • Possible separation anxiety; exercises should be done together with people

It's a good idea to try and exercise your Chigi every day. Though they're typically good-natured and enthusiastic, without consistent activity these dogs might become fussy, disobedient, and destructive. Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind! A few Chigi exercise ideas:

  • Walking: Two 15-minute walks per day is a good target
  • Fetch: Can be played indoors or out; use either a ball of the dog's favorite toy
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Dog Park: If properly socialized, Chigis enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Canine Sports: Chigis can excel at obedience trials and other events

When indoors, give your Chigi access to balls or toys that will allow the dog to burn any excess energy. It's also good to have a regular exercise schedule for the dog, such as walks after breakfast and dinner and playtime in the afternoon.

Chigi Maintenance

In terms of overall maintenance, these hybrids aren't too much trouble. Corgi-Chihuahua mix shedding is fair, and drooling isn't an issue.

Though some coat variety can exist, most Chigis have short- to medium-length coats that shed moderately all year long. Owners can brush their Chigis twice a week or so to keep the shedding to a minimum, and hair cleanup--vacuuming the floors, and lint rollers on clothes and furniture--will only be required once in a while.

And a Chigi almost never drools. If your Chigi is drooling excessively, it might be a sign of a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.
