Golden Pitbull Dog Breed

Other names:
Pitbull Golden Retriever

Pronunciation: [ Gol•dun Bull•dawg ]

The Golden Pitbull, also sometimes called just the Golden Bull or Golden Pit, is a hybrid dog that comes from mating a Golden Retriever with a Pitbull. The Pits used can be an American Pitbull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier, or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or any other type of dog under the broad definition of pitbull. There's not much universally-known about Golden Pitbulls.

Golden Pitbull Breed Details

It's not known why Pitbulls were crossed with Golden Retrievers to produce Golden Pitbulls. According to the many online photos, however, it may be that the golden coat of the Retriever on a Pitbull could be one reason. Regardless, these dogs tend to be no more or less aggressive than most any other dog, and yet they do require a lot of patience, training, and socialization. They are good around mature kids, but they can be very playful, so they must be supervised. They are not the best dogs for first-time dog owners, however, or people who are not home much.

Golden Pitbull Breed Description

Pitbulls (a type of dog that includes a great many hybrid and purebred dogs) and Golden Retrievers are vastly different. There is no breed description let alone a breed standard. In a single litter, you may end up with puppies that look very different and may look even more different from each other as they mature. Some Golden Pitfalls may look like a Golden retriever with the tight, short-haired, and huge mouth of a pitbull. Others may have the body of a pitbull and the coat and eyes of a Golden Retriever. There are all sorts of combinations for this multi-hybrid dog.

These may not be phenomenally smart dogs, and they may be stubborn, but they are not dumb. Retrievers have a mind of their own, and most pitbulls just want to play, so patience is required to bring out the best in a Golden Pitbull. They will love to be around you and your family and friends, and they will be very loyal to those who love them.

Most Pitbulls tend to be fine lying around until it's time to play or walk, and Golden Retrievers can easily be the opposite. While your Golden Pitbull won't mind being very active, he may or may not need to be prompted to exercise. It all depends on how much of which parent he inherits as well as how well he is trained, among other things.

Golden Pitbull Temperament

There remains much to understand about the Pitbull Golden Retriever mix temperament. Some people think that Pit Bulls are aggressive and that crossing one with a Golden Retriever will help calm their hybrid puppies. Other people, however, assert that a dog's aggression is created by the behavior of humans and that both parents are naturally friendly dogs that are sure to produce equally loving puppies.

Still, these dogs can be overly playful, and they may not understand their strength. Ultimately, they tend to not be naturally aggressive. They may or may not make good guard dogs, and they are not good watch dogs. This may seem odd, but they don't usually bark. On the other hand, they might be very territorial without warning.

Golden Pitbull Health

Hybrid vigor may help the Golden Pitbull be less prone to the long list of health issues that tend to affect the Golden Retriever, but it also requires a good diet and proper exercise to maintain the dog's health. There is also the high tolerance to pain that a Golden Pitbull may inherit from the Pitbull side, and this may sometimes make injuries difficult to see.

Here are some other problems that can occur in Golden Pitbulls:

  • Bloat
  • Epilepsy
  • Allergies
  • Cataracts

  • Osteosarcoma
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Mast cell tumors
  • Hemangiosarcoma
  • Von Willebrand's Disease
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
