Irish Setter Grooming

Grooming an Irish Setter will require a medium amount of effort but it can be done at home. The coat will need the most attention including: a couple brushing sessions per week, some clipping and bathing every 3 months. Bathing can be done more frequently if you Irish Setter smells. Your Setter's ears should be checked for dirt, debris and wax buildup at least on a monthly basis. If they need to be cleaned, you can wet a cotton ball with some ear cleaning solution and gently rub the inside of the ear. The nails should be trimmed monthly but you can check them more frequently. Dental care can be attempted at home as often as you are able; some adult dogs simply don't take to this so you can schedule a couple dental cleanings per year with your veterinarian.

Irish Setter Coat Care

The Red Setter's stunning, silky red coat will require the most care during the grooming process. Those wishing to know how to groom an Irish Setter at home will likely need a natural bristle brush, comb, pair of electric clippers, some straight shears and some thinning shears. There are essential three parts to coat care: brushing, clipping and bathing.

Brush his/her coat twice per week with the brush then comb through to remove tangles left behind. It is especially important to get out all mats and tangles before a bath. Clip around the ears, neck and face as necessary. Scissor the foot pads and use the blending shears where necessary to blend in where you clipped. Note the grooming pattern for the Irish Setter, as with all dogs, is with the grain of the hair. Finally, bathing is recommended every 3 months, however, you can do so more frequently if necessary-- just make sure to use a moisturizing shampoo or spray to keep the skin from drying out.

Irish Setter Styling & Haircuts

Irish Setter haircuts are simple, even show cuts. The majority of the coat is not cut-- the ears, face and neck being the only exception. Grooming these dogs for competition usually involves using a pair of clipper to trim up the ears and a pair of thinning shears to thin out the neck area. This emphasizes the aristocratic look of their faces. Their stunning coats are one of their prized features so you are unlikely to ever see a shaved Irish Setter.
