Jack Tzu Care

The Jack Tzu--a hybrid of a Jack Russell Terrier and a Shih Tzu--is a small-sized, energetic crossbreed that can be friendly and affectionate, but stubborn and feisty as well. Overall Jack Tzu care and maintenance won't take too much work, but will need to include some daily exercise, along with early training and socialization.

Below you'll find details on caring for a Jack Tzu including puppy development, exercise needs, and shedding/drooling tendencies. Find answers to your questions about raising a Jack Tzu in the following sections!

Jack Tzu Exercise Needs

Though small, these hybrids are incredibly energetic--so Jack Tzu exercise requirements are fairly high, especially for a dog of this size. Jack Tzus are both intelligent and athletic, so they'll need a variety of activities that not only condition them physically (walking, fetch) but stimulate them mentally as well (games, canine sports).

The typical adult Jack Tzu, depending on its age and overall activity level, will need about 45 minutes of proper exercise each day. You can start exercising your Jack Tzu puppy when it's 2½-3 months old by taking it on short walks, then you can increase the walks' length as the pup grows.

Precautions with Jack Tzu exercise:

  • Don't exercise puppies too hard before they're eight months old
  • A leash is required when exercising in public; leash training during puppyhood is highly recommended
  • Yards should be securely fenced to keep the dog from running off
  • May get cold easily; don't exercise in freezing temps

It's important to exercise your Jack Tzu every day. These hybrids can be stubborn and difficult, and without consistent activity they'll become disobedient, fussy, and may even develop Small Dog Syndrome. Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind! A few exercise ideas:

  • Walking: Two 15-minute walks per day is a good target
  • Fetch: Can be played indoors or out; use the dog's favorite toy
  • Hide-and-Seek: Great indoor activity; give the dog a treat when it finds you
  • Dog Park: Jack Tzus usually enjoy the company of other dogs
  • Laser Pointer: These hybrids will go nuts chasing that "little red dot"

When indoors, give your Jack Tzu access to balls or toys that allow the dog to burn excess energy. It's also god to have a regular exercise schedule for the dog, such as walks after breakfast and dinner and playtime in the afternoon.

Jack Tzu Maintenance

These hybrids don't need a ton of maintenance overall. Shih Tzu-Jack Russell shedding is usually moderate throughout the year, and drooling isn't an issue.

Though some coat variety exists, Jack Tzus usually have medium-length, shaggy coats that shed a fair amount all year long. Owners can brush their Jack Tzus' coats a couple of times a week to help collect dead hairs, and to keep the coats from matting and tangling. Hair cleanup--vacuuming the floors, and lint rollers on clothes and furniture--will be needed once in a while, but definitely won't be a constant chore.

And a Jack Tzu almost never drools. If your Jack Tzu is drooling excessively, it may be a sign of a medical issue, in which case a veterinarian's care is needed.
