They are easily exercised but might require frequent baths. Excellent for kids and homes with other pets, they will be a joy to keep indoors (they are recommended indoor dogs). Ori Pei Breed Description

Sharpugs, as hybrid dogs, will inherit characteristics from both parents but not always equally. We recommend prospective owners read up on the traits of both the Pug and Shar-pei before adopting one of these mixes. The following information for the Ori-pei can be supplemented by visiting our parent breed pages.

Members of this breed are very intelligent and people oriented. This makes them pretty easy to train, even for first time owners. If you don't have the patience to train a puppy, take this one to obedience classes, because she will be very sensitive to harsh tones and gestures. Due to the potential of your Sharpug to display stubbornness, begin training early. They will do well with tricks, housebreaking and obedience commands.

Ori-peis are loving and enjoy spending time with you. They will be happy to be your couch buddy but are also up for playtime with kids and other pets. Although they may enjoy chasing smaller pets, they are not aggressive and it will just be for fun. This may distress other animals such as cats, so be sure to train them early to curb this behavior if necessary.

These dogs enjoy daily outdoor walks but are not overly active. A yard is not necessary and neither is intensive exercise. This may disappoint some very active owners, so look elsewhere if you want a die-hard exercise buddy. They love to play and wrestle with other dogs. Be careful if you live anywhere very hot, they are sensitive to hot temperatures and should not be left outdoors for very long in these conditions.

Ori Pei Temperament

Sharpugs, as hybrid dogs, have personalities that are hard to predict and can differ quite a bit from one puppy to the next-- even if from the same litter. Overall, the Ori-pei temperament is summed up as loyal, intelligent, loving and friendly. They are recommended for all owners that have enough time for them and are recommended to be indoor pets.

This breed is very intelligent, people oriented and eager to please, so training will be very manageable. However, there are a couple facts to keep in mind. Ori-peis have been known to have stubborn characteristics sometimes so they should be trained as early as possible. Also, they are sensitive so patience and praise will get you a lot farther than harsh tones and corrections.

Pug x Shar-pei crosses will be great additions to households with kids and other pets. They are friendly and good natured and, although possibly clownish and playful, will not be aggressive towards other animals. A guardian the Sharpug is not, they are not frequent barkers and do not have protective instincts.

Ori Pei Health

A mix between Shar-pei and Pug should produce puppies that develop fewer health problems than their purebred parents, especially first generation crosses. Choosing a reputable breeder that offers a health guarantee, along with routine check ups at your veterinarian should help prevent and/or detect many conditions. Typically, Sharpugs live between 12-15 years. Although Labbe puppies are usually healthy, a few common ailments that can be passed down from their purebred parents include:

  • Respiratory and breathing issues from the short muzzle
  • Skin conditions and allergies
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Eye diseases
  • Patellar luxation, elbow and hip dysplasia
  • Nerve degeneration and epilepsy

The above is not an inclusive list and we recommend you read up on all possible health concerns of both parent breeds before purchasing or adopting an Ori-pei.
