Pronunciation: [ Pit•skee ]

The Pitsky, as this hybrid dog is popularly called, is a cross produced from a Husky and a Pitbull. The Husky can be either Alaskan or American, and the type of Pit tends to be an American Pit Bull Terrier. These dogs are presently very popular, and as there is no breed standard or oversight, there are those that are produced solely for profit and may be problematic. Because of this, the temperament and health profile of any given Pitsky is impossible to predict.

Pitsky Breed Details

It's anyone's guess why these two different dogs were crossed to produce a Pitsky. Huskies are not good in hot weather, and Pitbulls are not good in the cold climates that Huskies prefer. One dog loves to make every person a new friend, and the other is too often used by bad people to do bad things. Still, the parent breeds have a lot in common, and their crossbred Pitsky puppies can be great companions for highly active people. They aren't good for people with small children, non-canine pets, and small homes or apartments. First-time dog owners, providing they have lots of patience and resources, should do well with these dogs.

Pitsky Breed Description

The Pitsky is a dog that is big, rambunctious, and a bit of a handful. These hybrid dogs require a lot of supervision pretty much all the time. As they will rarely let you out of their sight, you'll quickly learn this!

There is no doubting this mixed breed's smarts. They'll no doubt use their intelligence to try and trick you, and you will have to be watching out all the time for escape attempts. Cat and squirrel chases will be attempted when you are not trying to prevent shoes and furniture from becoming chew toys.

These dogs will be too happy to be with you all day. On the other hand, their loyalty can be a bit much to handle if they perceive a threat. They will tend to do anything to save you from harm, and so you will need to be able to manage this in many ways.

Perhaps the best Pitbull Husky mix information you can seek out is that about keeping these dogs mentally and physically stimulated on a daily basis. Agility toys, food puzzles, and exercise that requires a bit more than merely running is what will keep Pitskies healthy, happy, and manageable.

Pitsky Temperament

The Pitbull Husky mix temperament is that of a remarkably friendly dog whose desire to play may surprise a lot of people. They may be a difficult to train as they are headstrong and are a bit hyperactive. With a fair amount of obedience training can be successful so that these dogs are all about fun! They are sure to be extremely loyal and even a bit territorial. Depending on how much of which parent they inherit more, they may be very good with other dogs or a bit aggressive. As they seek to please their masters, however, this can be worked out with early socialization and constant albeit gentle training.

If the Husky side is strong in a Pitsky, she may be a bit mischievous . They will constantly test you, their boundaries and most anything else (including the fence!), and while this can be fun, it must be a carefully managed lest they become too much of an alpha.

Pitsky Health

Huskies and Pitbulls have lots of health problems, and the Husky Pitbull cross is one of the dogs that is apparently not helped much by hybrid vigor. Add to that the popularity of this mixed breed and the somewhat high price of the puppies, and there are sure to be lots of problems. This is definitely a dog for which every available legitimate health test should be had before adopting.

Here are some of the more serious health concerns that can occur in a Pitsky:

  • Allergies
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems
  • Skin problems
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Cardiovascular disease

Pitskies, when properly maintained, tend to have a longer life span than most large dogs, and they typically live from 12 to 15 years.
