Pointer Grooming

The Pointer has a short, shiny, smooth coat that doesn't need much care at all. The single-layered coats shed moderately, so they'll need to be brushed a couple of times per week. Bathing is only necessary every 2-3 months, unless of course the dog gets especially dirty or stinky--just make sure when bathing your Pointer to use canine shampoo to avoid irritating the dog's skin. Haircuts aren't required at all.

Below you'll find further details on brushing a Pointer, and you'll learn why shaving these dogs' coats is never a good idea.

Brushing

As with their overall grooming, Pointers' short, smooth coats don't need a lot of brushing. These hunting dogs shed a fair amount year-round, and will need a Pointer brush only a couple of times per week to help keep the shedding to a minimum.

The best brush for a Pointer, most owners say, is a grooming glove--though some prefer a medium bristle brush.

How to brush a Pointer: first spray the coat with water mist from a spray bottle. Then starting at the shoulders, brush the entire coat section by section, moving in the direction of hair growth. Pointer coats rarely mat or tangle--but if you do encounter a hair snarl, first try working it out with your fingers, and if needed continue working through it with the end teeth of a greyhound comb.

Pointer Styling & Haircuts

With the Pointer's short-haired, smooth coats, haircuts aren't necessary. The hair simply isn't long enough to be cut any shorter than it already is! The only style Pointer dogs can sport is their natural one

Even so, some think that shaving a Pointer will reduce shedding and keep the dog cool in hot weather. While the latter may be true, shaving these dogs' coats is not recommended. Unless the Pointer is shaved bald--which is never a good idea!--the coat will still shed, the hairs will just be shorter. A shaved Pointer will be highly susceptible to sunburn, and will get cold very easily.

So to anyone thinking about shaving their Pointer's coat: put those clippers away!
