When a purebred American Eskimo Dog is crossed with a purebred Pomeranian, you get a stunning dog that is both high-energy playmate and soft cuddler, the Pomimo! Intelligent and alert, these little watchdogs will take moderate effort to train. With proper training and socialization they can be best pals with kids, friendly towards other pets and social with strangers. Some tend to be territorial and yappy if training is neglected. They need PLENTY of daily outdoor activity and they shed near constantly. Please visit both parent breed pages for information on temperaments, appearance and health problems that can be inherited in the Pomimo.

Pomimo Breed Description

An American Eskimo Dog mixed with a Pomeranian will produce a hybrid Pomipoos that will vary much more in appearance and temperament than the purebred parents. Your puppy may inherit more characteristics from one or the other, or they may get an equal mix. Before adopting or purchasing, it is recommended to supplement this Pomipoo information by reading both parent breed pages.

Training this brilliant breed hailing from two smart little dogs. While sometimes they can appear stubborn, they are loyal and eager to learn to please. Treats and praise, along with patience, will get you exactly where you want to be with this breed--loving with kids, and social with other pets and strangers. Obedience training and socialization from puppy age will lessen territorial behaviors, barking, anxiety and other problems.

Pomimos greatly enjoy attention and will be happy to live indoors with you, however, they are also high energy. These guys need daily outdoor activity time lest they get bored, destructive and even aggressive. Take them on several walks each day and to the dog park whenever possible. Giving them toys to play with as well as outdoor time in a fenced yard (helpful to have but not necessary). Be careful not to over exert her in hot weather-- that beautiful fluffy coat can get hot! If allowed to expend all their excess energy they will happily cuddle in your lap all evening.

Pomimo Temperament

Since he is a hybrid, the Pomimo's temperament cannot be predicted in complete accuracy. They inherit personality traits from both parents and not always equally. Generally, these dogs tend to be friendly, affectionate, energetic and intelligent. They can be cuddly fluff-balls one minute and be ready for playtime with the kids in the next minute!

A Pomeranian and American Eskimo mix will be a good addition to families with kids. They will patiently tolerate small children as long as they have been taught how to handle a pet; meanwhile they will be tireless playmates for older kids. With strangers the Pomimo may be alert and territorial, usually barking an alert at first, before switching to her friendly self. Generally, you don't have to worry about having multiple pets around this breed as they are said to get along quite peacefully with other animals if they are trained and socialized with them as a puppy. New pet acquaintances they are not familiar with are better met outside the home or "territory" of your Pomimo.

Pomimo Health

Crosses between the Pomeranian x American Eskimo Dog are small sized dogs, even when fully grown. It is important to avoid rough play and show children how to carefully handle pets. Also, these dogs have very thick double coats so leaving them outdoors in hot temperatures is not good for them. According to many breeders, Pomimos can live up to 15 years, with the average lifespan being slightly less.

Hybrid dogs are typically healthier than their purebred parents, especially the first generation crosses. This breed is especially susceptible to eye diseases, patellar luxation and skin allergies. Hypoglycemia and hypothyroidism are two other disorder that might come to attention. It is recommended you familiarize yourself with all potential health conditions for both parent breeds (the Pomeranian and American Eskimo Dog) before adopting a Pomimo.
