Vizmaraner Breed Description

Vizmaraners, as hybrid dogs, will inherit characteristics from both parents but not always equally. We recommend prospective owners read up on the traits of both Vizslas and Weimaraners before adopting one of these guys.

Both parent breeds have rich hunting histories and this means the Vizmaraner, itself, will be an intelligent and capable hunter. They are very intelligent and are inclined to obey; Weislas will naturally pick up on hunting activities with few repetitions, but even with obedience commands they should learn quickly. Socializing them with other people and pets at an early age will reduce their neediness towards you and reduce their weariness around strangers.

Members of this breed are loyal and affectionate to their owners and tend to stick to them almost constantly. They are playful and friendly towards other canines but may have strong prey instincts towards smaller animals. Luckily, these dogs are very trainable and, if trained and socialized early, they should be able to live in a household with other types of pets. Weislas are gentle yet playful with children but sometimes weary of strangers. They have no protective instincts and make excellent therapy dogs.

Vizmaraners are immensely energetic dogs that will need daily outdoor exercise. A large property or fenced yard is ideal, however, as long as they receive their daily activity they can live indoors. These dogs enjoy hunting, tracking, swimming, hiking, and running alongside you or your bike. Although it is recommended to always leash your dog when not in an enclosed area, this breed will tend to stick close to you regardless. One of the appreciated aspects of this breed is their ability to turn down the energy when appropriate and just calmly relax next to you.

Vizmaraner Health

The Vizsla Weimaraner mix should be healthier than the parent breeds, especially first generation crosses. Choosing a reputable breeder, combined with routine trips to your veterinarian, can help prevent some issues. It is recommended you read up on all possible health issues of both parent breeds before adopting a Vismaraner. Typically, this breed will live from 12-15 years with few problems.

Weislas may inherit knee, hip and eye problems, as well as arthritis, more readily than other issues. Their attractive, low maintenance coats are short and will not keep them warm in very cold temperatures.
