Cavador Dog Breed

The Cavador is a medium sized hybrid dog which is bred by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Labrador Retriever. As a hybrid the Cavador will inherit physical and behavioral traits of both the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Labrador Retriever dog breeds. However, not all individuals will inherit the same characteristics (even if from the same litter), so it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with both the Labrador Retriever and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if you are planning on adopting a Cavador.

Cavadors are cheerful pets made to be family companions. They love people and children and get along with most pets. They are intelligent, easy to train, and their medium size makes them suitable for most living environments. These dogs require a moderate amount of exercise and a minimal amount of grooming. Their sociable disposition makes them unideal as guard dogs but if you are looking for a dog that will be loving towards family and guests alike, you may have found your match.

Cavador Breed Description

The Cavador is considered a medium sized dog breed. Adults stand up to 20 inches tall and will weigh 25 – 55 lbs. Their medium size gives them wonderful adaptability; these dogs will be happy living in nearly any environment and are capable of performing a wide variety of canine tasks.

These dogs are affectionate and do well with children. They make for wonderful playmates and should have no issues with other pets if they are introduced to them at a younger age.

You can expect the Cavador to be a low to medium maintenance dog breed. Their coat will need to be brushed about once or twice a week and they do shed an average amount. These dogs need a fair amount of daily exercise to stay happy and in shape.

Cavador Breed History

The Cavador is a fairly new dog breed and because of this the breed does not have a very detailed history. It is likely that the Cavador was first intentionally bred in the last few decades as the popularity of hybrid dogs increased.

Cavador Appearance

As a crossbreed, the Cavador will inherit physical traits from both parent breeds. Not all Cavadors will inherit the same traits which means some individuals may have more Labrador Retriever characteristics, others may have more Cavalier King Charles Spaniel characteristics, and some may show a mix of both parent breeds.

These medium sized dogs often look like a miniature version of the Labrador Retriever. Their coat is short to medium length, water-resistant, smooth, and dense. Their body is well proportioned with an inquisitive face notable for its brown, almond shaped eyes. Their ears are floppy and fall forward and sometimes feature the characteristic Spaniel fluff.

Cavador Temperament

The temperament of the Cavador is dependent on the behavioral traits inherited from its parents. Some Cavadors will inherit traits from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, others the Labrador Retriever, and some will have a mix of behaviors inherited from both parent breeds.

The Cavador is the epitome of a family companion pet. They are loving, sociable, and get along with children and other pets; they are intelligent and easy to train or teach tricks; they love activities like fetch and Frisbee. These dogs enjoy being around their families so much that they may attempt to follow their people wherever they go, and whine whenever they cannot accompany them. Cavadors are alert and may bark to signal a new person is approaching, but don't expect much in the way of a passionate defense; the dog may well treat this new fellow like an old friend.

Cavador Maintenance

You can expect the Cavador to be a medium maintenance dog breed. It is an active dog descending from the Labrador and therefore will need a decent amount of exercise. Grooming this dog's water-repellent coat will be a breeze.

Grooming Requirements

These dogs should require a very minimal amount of grooming. Brushing once or twice a week to remove dead hairs and the occasional bath should be sufficient.

Exercise Requirements

This breed requires a fair amount of daily exercise to stay healthy. 30 minutes to an hour each day of exercise, be it walking or playtime, should be enough to keep the Cavador healthy.

Living Requirements

The Cavador is a rather adaptable dog. It will be most at home when it lives somewhere with at least a small yard to run around in, but owners report that these dogs live happily in apartments if given the proper amount of exercise.

Cavador Health

The life expectancy for this breed is 10 – 14 years. As a hybrid, the Cavador has more genetic diversity than its purebred parent breeds which helps with the breed's health and hardiness. At this time there are no known genetic issues with this breed.
